apparently today is the feast day of some roman catholic saint from palestine, who certainly never killed a dragon.

It is also the International Day of the Book, and Shakespeare's traditional birthday (he would have been 441 today).

According to Wikipedia...

he's also patron saint of Portugal, Georgia (the one in the Caucasus), archers, boy scouts and skin diseases.

i was thinking how if we wanted a national day, Bede's day (he died may 25) would be much better.

My personal choice would be St. Cuthbert, but that might have a lot to do with me wanting to spend the day drinking Newcastle Brown Ale and singing traditional north-eastern songs.

I suppose I could do that anyways though, I went to one of his schools.

Didn't he used to be patron saint? I thought St George got the job in the 14th century because some king (possibly Edward III but I couldn't swear to it) wanted somebody who had the image if a butt-kicking warrior.
