for some reason, I've spent quite a while looking at the BBFC's website. They seem to have put their entire database of decisions online, going back to the 1910s.

I think I've found the first film to have been banned in the UK. It is called "The Great Physician", directed by Richard Ridgely, released in 1913, and features Charles Ogle as Death, which might explain the ban. here is the rejection.

See, but I can't find my housemate's friends film that was rejected (Day of Eric II, Total and Utter Carnage)...
