covenant ticket arrived today - which is cutting it a bit close. tomorrow gig, then friday up to sheffield for batfink!

started reading the Kalevala (in English translation), which has been kindly lent to me by [livejournal.com profile] cyniborg.

this is the Finnish "national epic", which when read in 1911/1912 by a kid called Ronald from the fringes of Birmingham, caused him to say "we've got to get ourselves one of these" and then a few years later to write one, in some cases just lifting things wholesale (compare Túrin with Kullervo.) i started to write a filk about Túrin once, which is not quite of the same level of inspiration, but hey.

zeitgeist ii went pretty well, considering. a few bands i shall be looking up on interweb. a few i shan't. my head hurts now. :/

oh. and i finished Frankenstein now. not sure what to read next. i really should make a start on some of these recommendations really. ;)

and happy may day!

and a further addendum: when i got back into my building late last night i was greeted by a cloud of dust which made me choke and i could barely get through. some idiot appears to have let off most if not all of a powder fire extinguisher in the entrance area. rah!

i'm about two-thirds of the way through Frankenstein now.

i am wondering how different the story would have been had Frankenstein's monster been slightly smarter and had WORN A PAPER BAG OVER ITS HEAD. discuss.

back from mudmeet. rather entertaining. also knackering. finished The Catcher In The Rye up there, and then started Frankenstein on the way down. the rather dissimilar textual styles (although i note they are both written as first-person narratives/correspondence) have vaguely tempted me to rewrite Frankenstein in a more modern mode of speech. Robert Walton's first message to his sister could be thus:

Hi Maggie. Got into St Petersburg yesterday, very cold. Planning to discover Northwest Passage. Been whaling lots, even got hired as first mate. Off to Arkhangelsk in a couple of weeks! Will keep in touch. x Rob.

Except translate that to txt.

upcoming week currently rather quiet:

you will note absence of any form of pub quiz. :( I'll be happy to do Thursday's again if other people go, though don't want to turn up there on my own.

Happy birthdays to [livejournal.com profile] doctor_tron and to William Shakespeare!

been sleeping really badly all this week, and bad headaches. had to go home from work early on friday because i wasn't physically capable of looking at monitor anymore.

had recovered enough by this morning to go shopping in nottingham with [livejournal.com profile] vjbseven where i utterly failed to buy any cool new clothes. i did however get a copy of The Dark Knight Returns which I am now reading. early night tonight though, I think. (insofar as post-11pm is early).

Finally got hold of Ministry of Space by Warren Ellis. in um, trade paperback (is that the right term) from amazon.

spoilers possibly )

[livejournal.com profile] psychocandyclub was good. seem to have failed to do any christmas shopping again weekend. oh well. amazon finally sent me Ministry of Space.

gave the unholy bingo/pub-quiz a miss last night, and instead watched The Talons of Weng-Chiang last night, with [livejournal.com profile] vjbseven and [livejournal.com profile] lost_species. quite enjoyable.

also. i seem to have finished (the regular run of) sandman. wow.

CSL tonight. not sure if worth going or not.

Quite a bit better now. Seems to have been a combination of migraine nausea, uncomfortable levels of wind and probably not having eaten enough the last few days. Still have quite bad headache but the other problems are now mostly gone.

I had been planning to return to work Monday, and possibly be well enough to do things this weekend (like actually move into my flat). We shall see.

Continuing to read Sandman. I was particularly amused by the guest appearance in Three Septembers and a January.

Anansi Boys. Good. Unlike the epic American Gods, which introduces the modern Anansi character, this is rather a small tale. Interesting character development. It is generally light-hearted, but only laugh-out-loud funny in a few places, I found.

So. Anyone want to borrow my copy? :)

I am much better today than I was yesterday on one level. However, I am really knackered and have been all day. At this rate I will be lucky to be able to return to work this week.

Read much of Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman now. Interesting book. Shall have more to say about it when I've finished.

Read HP6 today. Somewhat better edited, at least.

now finished reading HP4 and HP5. wow, that woman needs an editor. snape confuses me.

for my next book I am reading Lullaby, which I bought some time ago intending to read on the train, and then never got round to, and was reminded of by an anonymous reader (eek... i have anonymous readers... but who?!...)

Watching live8 and reading Misspent Youth now (which was recommended by [livejournal.com profile] milkyeyes). Sci-fi set in Rutland (I see the author is from there). Mentions of Oakham and Uppingham and Stamford and Peterborough and Melton Mowbray and the A47. I suspect if Leicester itself is mentioned though it will be in a bad way... they don't like us, those Rutlanders.

Update (at 0840am) : Finished this now. Quite a fun light read. Ending was obvious. Not convinced by characterisation of Jeff Baker, he seemed in the end not really any different to Tim and his peers. Is the moral that experience doesn't really affect you?

Just finished reading American Gods. Very good book, though I wish now I had more background in the area.
