Someone has put up a rendering of OpenStreetMap in the UK in Welsh. Some of the data is dodgy, but I expect it will quickly be fixed now there is a practical reason to do this. Looks kind of weird having Welsh names for only some English cities (what is the Welsh for Milton Keynes? Heh. But surely there are Welsh names for Rochester and Manchester?)

update: added Welsh names for Plymouth, Bath, Manchester, Colchester, Lancaster, Salisbury. Corrected Tywyn.

I don't know of a Welsh name for Rochester (which is surprising, since it must have been around when they were running Kent). Manchester is "Manceinion (http://cy.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manceinion)".

Yeah, it's not possible to ask Google to narrow search to Welsh-only documents yet, but if you approximate it (http://www.google.com/search?hl=cy&q=mae+yn+rochester&btnG=Chwiliwch) there are lots of instances of people writing "Rochester" for Rochester.

Today from that map I learned that Caerwynt is the Welsh name of Winchester. It's sort of like having a three-dimensional map, because towns in England either do or don't have Welsh names, and there's generally a reason for it (either they are very old, or they are new but are places that Welsh people have to talk about a lot in modern times), and this forms the third dimension of the map.

I've found the list I made back in 2006 and will make sure everything on it is there.

I think it would be a useful thing to have on live.gnome.org or something, or at least somewhere on the web.

You added those names, or they did?

Does the OSM format allow for a place to have multiple names by language?

(Bear in mind that the question also arises in Scotland (http://gd.wikipedia.org/wiki/Obar_Dheathain), and I imagine Man and Cornwall too.)

Since I can't seem to zoom to it, did you get Hereford translated to Henffordd?

I did. The map won't update until whenever they re-render it. I don't know when that will be.

There is a 'name' tag, and then you can do 'name:cy', 'name:gd', 'name:fr', 'name:en' etc in addition to that.

I the one who put up the render, the plan is to update it weekly as the new data sets are available.
I'm glad is prompting people to add the welsh names!
