abigailbradyso, it's that time of year again. a new discworld book arrived and i have read it in one sitting.
spoilers ahead:
I've liked the recent run of Discworld novels - since The Fifth Elephant the only one that hasn't to my mind been magnificent was The Thief of Time.
Unfortunately, that run stops here. Making Money is a perfectly serviceable book, but seems to miss the sparkle of recent books. The book is a sequel to Going Postal and suffers from being a retread of it - Going Postal anticipated that the fine citizens of Ankh-Morpork would take to paper money well, and they do. The subplots - an inheritance squabble and the liberation of golems, link in well, but failed to grab me. There are moments - Bent's sudden reappearance at the tribunal, and hey, it's well worth a read, but I don't think this is up there with Night Watch, The Truth and Monstrous Regiment.
The direction this takes the series in is curious. This one demystifies Vetinari further - at least when the narrator is seeing with Lipwig's POV - and I'm not sure I like that. Meanwhile, there are hints that the railway tunnels and the Motor discovered in Thud! are to be part of this massive infrastructure program called the Undertaking - presumably the Ankh and Morpork Underground Railway. I fully expect the next AM/Watch book to have
*the Ankh and Morpork Metropolitan Railway partly built
*commuters
*development of suburbs (Metroland)
*no character development for Captain Carrot
