Life on Mars good! they've established quickly a new narrative thread to replace the one throughout the first series, and its ratcheting things up a notch.

i have some speculation about what happens in the end.

either, he wakes up and it was all a dream. or it is established somehow he is definitely mad. those are the obvious endings. which is why i doubt either of them will happen.

one thing that the first series didn't touch on, is Sam's supposed background. we know he's supposed to be from Hyde. in episode 2, someone claims to recognise him from Hyde. how extensive is his backstory? he's met the 2006's Sam Tyler's parents, in 1973; what about the parents of the 1973 Sam Tyler? by my reckoning (assuming he is as old as John Simm is now) he should have been born in 1937.

so i'm thinking that he wakes up from his coma, all right. but he's in his 60s. and he's married to Annie Cartwright.

is this speculation based on any known facts? nope. but i had a wild idea and thought i'd put it here so if by some random chance i hit the right spot i can say "i told you so!"


how does this sound? plausible?

I reckon he'll wake up in a pod in the future, a la Matrix, with a very embarrassed agent apologising for the crosstalk between different world simulations.

Heh. That could be quite a good ending, but i think it'd not fit the tone of the show so far. We'll see.

Perhaps it does have an obvious ending, which would explain the restricting it to 2 series (to minimise the embarrassment).

Your theory ain't half bad, I have another, only half-baked one which involves a brain tumour - as per the blinding migraines and increasingly physical symptoms. The bit I haven't thought through is whether he has a tumour in 1973 and is making up the future or vice-versa.

Of course, it could just all be down to the Dharma Initiative.

They could always leave us without an answer, if done artistically and not as a cheat, could be more interesting (avoid the x-files method). I gather John Simm wasn't really up for third series: it had a particularly heavy shooting schedule for him.

Brain tumour option seems plausible. I could see him getting diagnosed with one in 1973, and him denying that this is what is causing the visions/blackouts...

Oh really, that's the reason? And there I was thinking it was all to do with scriptwriter integrity... I generally stay away from the background story of how fictional shows are written/made, I just want to be told a story :)

If it's just John Simm stopping further series, they could have come up with a plot twist that meant a change in his appearance, surely! Even I could!

Ah, but in episode 1 something he did in his coma directly affected the outcome of his '21st century' awareness.

So perhaps he's able to affect time lines in his coma? That would be funky... :) - so he'd wake up in a different timeline :)

ah, yeah, the third obvious option: that he really has travelled in time (either due to his coma, or by some other method). i can't easily reconcile the idea of a "mission" with his perceptions of the 21st century hospital..., so maybe there are multiple factions at work. we'll see how they go with this...

Hmm, We saw Sam as a 30-something in the first episode of the first series, just before he was hit by the car, so we know 'he' was born in 69 or thereabouts (he was three or four when he met himself as a child).

Two bizarre endings spring to mind, bearing in mind that he has affected the 'future' and is aware of it, so we have a link between the two times. He's been knocked through time and split in two in the process (a la Riker in a transporter accident in the ST:TNG) with his 21st century self stuck in a coma from the trauma but mentally linked to his 20th century self.

Or

only his mind has been sent back through time into someone else's body as an experiment to influence the past, leaving a residual 'mind' in the 21st century comatose body linked to his transposed mind now living in '73. He see's himself as he remembers himself, not as others see him, which may explain why someone recognises him in the past.

Or it could be Timelord japes!
