I think I just succesfully persuaded someone on IRC that I lived in the Welsh town of CaerlÅ·r in Far East Wales (people sometimes assume I am Welsh because of my nick, he asked what part, and I was being silly). Hence new usericon to celebrate, showing location of said town.

I really should stop making up geography as a hobby. There's enough of it already.

The next mystery is

        WHAT GOES HERE?

  Wessex Middlesex Essex

           Sussex

The answer, of course, is Nossexpleasewerebritish.

I'm sure some Welsh people would be happy at the idea of reclaiming the occupied territories. :)

I daresay they'd annex Oswestry first.

Hmmm, is it true the name is derived from the original site of King Lear's castle?

Not that you'd hear any of the old dears referring to the Soar and the Grand Union as the 'Lear Cut'. Or, for that matter, shouting after the Yeomen* 'Ooo shot the pump, Then?

History is dying, if not already dead.

* The Leicestershire Yeomanry are now part of the Anglian Regiment. Bonus marks if you can identify the source of the remark about the 'Pump', though: I haven't heard that in more than 20 years.

No - the name appears to predate the legend, although as usual its unclear whether it was a real legend or whether it was just something Geoffrey of Monmouth made up.

What it was probably named after was the river, which is thought to have been called the 'Legre'. Of course, the Saxons also renamed the river the Soar, obscuring this.

Looking at a list of Welsh version of English city names I realised that the Welsh "Caergrawnt" (Cambridge) = "Grantchester". Someone may have pointed this out to me before, but I think its pretty cool anyway.

And there was me thinking My Lovely Hometown (http://cy.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caergrawnt) was named after Cary Grant...

I wonder then what the actual Welsh for Grantchester is.

i live just off london rd (on tichborne street) so there, or anywhere within walking distance of there, is fine for me. as for when, i'm pretty much perpetually free as i don't actually DO anything :)

albeit discounting this coming weekend, as i won't be in leicester..

Ah, that's quite handy, as I work just on the other side of London Road (Granville Road). Could come round some lunchtime coming week, maybe? My phone number is here if you want to text me details.
