having fun with maps.google.co.uk. So far I have discovered that :

It doesn't deal very well with house numbers. "10 Downing Street, London" does not produce a useful result. It doesn't find the two nearest chinese places, but does find the nearest chippy. It has a strange idea of where Elephant and Castle is (Bronti Close apparently), and doesn't know about the London Congestion Charge.

It has icons for tube and mainline stations in London, but not in Leicester (though it does show tracks everywhere).

I wish it were like a Wiki where you could just correct the location when you notice it is off or wrong. And it would learn from the user corrections.

We could probably build a google-maps-annotations hack. If nobody has already. (seen some interesting ones so far).

I noticed it didn't map the roads in my home village terribly well, it shows some things like the B&Q car park opposite our house, yet doesn't show half the roads in my home village...

Love the speed tho, much faster than the American equivalent I was using the other week. Some very nifty vector format jibbler....

Now if they could change the interface to be more intuitive - I hate it, I keep zooming when I mean to move and moving when I mean to zoom. Would like the ability to drag a square to zoom...

Still beats multimap into the dust and is a probable fair contendor for what we use Streetmap extensively for.

It's pretty good, tried searching for chippies and chinese around my home town of Blaenau Ffestiniog and it worked well. Did find some errors though, one of the chippies had it's name spelt wrong and there were also some errors with the roads having incorrect labelling and showing connections where there weren't.

I'm looking forward to having the satellite images to play with like they have on the US version. Looking at Vegas with it's grid system for the roads made it look just like Sim City :)

Ooh, also noticed that the railway magically vanishes! The railway actually carries on for another 5 miles or so towards the [currently being decommissioned] nuclear power station at Trawsfynydd.

Try getting a route that requires a ferry trip...
They assume you own an amphibious car.

Also, when you zoom right the way out, you can head across the Atlantic to the North American map (I assume maximum scale will be the whole world eventually.) Though the search remains UK only, Washington gives you the one in Tyne and Wear.

I think I'll still use streetmap though - I've got Perl code for ripping off their little 200x200 map gifs and stitching them together so I can put them on my Palm.
