back home now. will write long update tomorrow. briefly -
  • wearing steel toe-cap boots through metal detectors is a bad idea
  • apfelwein (frankfurt/hesse cider) is bitter but palatable. for some reason, it is offered diluted as well as neat. when i drank some at the funfair i was mocked as if they could not believe a foreigner would have neat apfelwein. this would make sense except it tastes quite weak.
  • some wikipedians aren't geeks!
  • a crazy man wants to start up sign language wikipedias, featuring video footage of people signing articles. this i think will be very interesting to edit!
  • tlh.wikipedia.org has a limited life expectancy
  • richard stallman is still mad
  • i should make openid support for mediawiki
  • jimbo can dance.
yawn

He showed up on IRC, God help us. (For those of us stuck at home only having Wikimania in our pants.)

Eek!

Still, it would have been fun to go "Emacs sucks!" or "GNU sucks!" and see what his reaction would be ;)

[identity profile] abigailb.livejournal.com 2005-08-09 08:11 am (UTC)(link)
believe me, his reaction wouldn't be fun at all.

You know what?

You're right.

People did call him "GNU/RMS", though they didn't refer at all to his recent "GNU/Linux" POV-pushing on the wiki itself ;-)

Someone who I shall not name told me he had asked for access to a parrot.

steel toe caps:
they made me take off my big platform new rocks in istanbul: they looked really cool going through the x-ray machine (you could see all the coils in the soles) so I didn't mind too much.

Less happy when asked to remove my 20 hole steel toe caps another time though....

a) don't quite follow you

b) apparently 5.5 to 7% according to wikipedia article about it

c) yeah. it was a public board meeting thingy Q&A session, someone asked about fictional languages and Jimbo was talking about how yeah, klingon was indefensible and actually why didn't they just delete it now, and there was general agreement. and asked brion to. who then locked it. using his wi-fi. :)

a) I don't see any difference between this and having user accounts. OpenID is just a technical system to make sure that you only have to sign in to one website, and it can then vouch to you for others.

c) I would ignore anything that Mark Williamson says.

Yeah, but we can still ban them and IP check them and suchforth. It may even be possible to allow people to have local display names in the User: namespace.

I had similar problems with my New Rocks when I went upto Glasgow the other month. On the way up there they made me take them off and put them thru the scanner. On the way down they said not to bother. So I set the bloody scanners off and they all went mad at me, and all I could do was stand there whilst they waved them scanning things over me and my boots and muttering 'told you so!!'
