There's a programme on channel 4 tonight about a survey conducted to find out the "new 10 commandments". It is expected to have such things as "Thou shalt protect the environment", and "Thou shalt look after the vulnerable".

But did you know that the ten commandments vary in the different Mosaic traditions?

Thinking about it, if I were an adherent to one of these religions, I would find this program far more offensive than the Jerry Springer opera. Does this make sense to anyone else?

I'm intrigued by the fact that the Protestant version is closer to the Judaic version than the Catholic version. Do you suppose that's because of the increased emphasis on scripture over church dogma?

Not sure. Some bizarre Protestants of the Iain Paisley type like to claim that the Catholics have tried to obscure the "graven images" part - but then they also claim that the European Union is a papist plot.

It's not totally bizarre. The Catholics did renumber the Commandments (funnily enough the Jewish version is the original), and part of the Reformation was to change that back. There was a LOT of fuss over the graven images issue, and many Protestants felt the Catholics had tried to obscure it. I was reading a history of the Reformation recently and there was quite a bit on this. I'm not entirely sure why the Catholics renumbered it originally, though.

There are also 2 versions of the 10 Commandments in the Bible. In one version it says "remember the Sabbath day" and in the other it says "guard the Sabbath day".

Also, the Catholics changed the Old Testament canon--they added 6 books which Jews don't consider part of the Bible. Many Protestant sects have gone back to the Jewish canon, considering the added books part of the Apocrypha. They kept the book splits the Catholics had done (Judges, Samuel, Kings, Chronicles, the 12 Prophets), but came up with their own order. So the Jewish Bible has 24 books, the Protestants 39, and the Catholics 45!

... which is a little odd, given that the Pope appears to be saying, from reports of his latest book, that the EU (and particularly its human rights law) is "part of a new ideology of evil". Presumably the papist plot is out of control :-)

Oh, and I didn't find the program offensive, exactly. To me it was just typical modern nonsense. I'm a traditionalist when it comes to religion :-)
