What does "didn't think it was a patch on sth." mean? I'm not familiar with that expression.

It means "not consider very good compared to". The usual form is "X is not a patch on Y", which I have here varied by extracting the "not" outwards to form part of the overall "think" phrase.

Do they not say that in Canadia?
