the state of the map

was at state of the map this weekend, (conference for openstreetmap). enjoyed it. tired now. group photo

some things of note

*cartography is serious business. however, with osm, you can do some really freaky shit (i recommend clickying on this even if you don't care about maps in the slightest)
*the multimap founder, slipped in, on bullet points 4 of 5 on a slide towards the end of his talk, that he wanted to see multimap go live using OSM data before the end of the year. presumably just for the isle of wight/cambridge/netherlands/whatever.
*something like 99% of attendees were male. you get a gender skew in free software/content stuff, but this is absurd.
*i must organise a hackney mapping party in august or september.
*xslt is a very scary thing indeed.
*spaghetti junction is hard to render.
*flats don't get any tidier if you just leave them for a weekend

I've noticed that about flats. Damn shame too.

Those squirmy roads are plain wrong.

next time i look for a flat, i'm definitely going for a self-cleaning one.

it apparently has actual practical uses. like, you could have the squirms represent congestion or a route, or something.

Next time leave the door unlocked and if you're lucky some burglars may clean the place out. This does of course involve a redefinition of the word lucky

That'd be fine for the sub-set of the population who could look at that and think "ah, congestion!" rather than "holy shit what was I drinking?"

well, although i can't make guesses as to why people who aren't me haven't done things, maybe because it's an international event? to be honest, i wouldn't have thought anyone would subscribe to talk-gb but not talk - there were many reminders on that.

apparently the idea would be to have congested roads become narrower on the map, representing clogged arteries. (this explains the ipswich as beating heart video uploaded by same person)

i have a feeling they might just nick the dvd and cd collections and not remove the tea-stains on the worktop, though.

stick a sign on the door saying burglars by appointment only must bring own removal van
